Always at the Beginning

Why is it that we always start diets and such at the beginning of something? Like the beginning of the year, the first of the month, the beginning of the week. Is there some sort of magicness (I made that word up) to the beginning of whatever? Will we fail if we start on a Wednesday in the middle of the year?

Beginnings are typically the start because it is a fresh new month, week, year, or whatever. Birthdays and Anniversaries are usually popular days to start on as well. We start and feel fresh and excited about it. I bet if you pay attention to your gym (if and when you can go) you will notice that it is busier the beginning of the month compared to the end of the month.

It is just somehow hard wired into our brains I suppose. We begin at the first of whatever and pump everything we have into it. Then by the middle we begin to lag a bit and then end comes and we are dragging our butts looking for an excuse to just quit. That is true about almost anything we begin at the first of the month or whatever.

Think about it, other than work stuff, how many projects, diets, workouts, etc have you started on the first day of the year, month or week only to be ready to quit by the last day? I have a huge list of projects that have happened that way. Heck, I have one that I have been attempting to get done for more than a year. I have no idea why I just don’t stop and do it.

Other than I feel like I need to start at the beginning and see it through to the end. At this point I need to just give up on it. It is never going to get done. Maybe I won’t know what to do with myself if I finish it.

I didn’t start my new workout plan at the beginning or the month or even the week. I just started it one day. I had been telling myself I was going to do and then I did. I woke up one morning and though day is the day to begin. I’ve stuck with this one longer than any of the others. Although I admit it’s not much of a plan. It is just what works for me at this moment.

I can’t wait to get back to the gym some. I didn’t go all every day before but I did go a couple of times a week and I enjoyed my time there. So once I am able to go and not have to worry about bringing anything home I will get back to it.

DO YOU BEGIN THINGS AT THE BEGINNING OF THE MONTH, WEEK, YEAR? WHY OR WHY NOT?

  1. I totally agree that beginnings don’t have to be at the start of a new week, month, year. One day, I just got tired of being overweight, so I decided to make changes that day. And it’s stuck for over 5 years. Good for you for finding what works in your world… One day at a time!
