Wait…I Need Leg Day?

I am not the most savvy when it comes to working out. In fact, I am pretty sure I do it wrong most of the time. Recently someone asked me what I did for leg day and I was flabbergasted. I need a leg day? Like a day just to work on my legs. I’m sure many of you are cringing right now at the thought that I didn’t already know this. I didn’t though.

It turns out leg day is more important than I thought it would be. On leg day you engage more of your muscle groups than some of the other forms of exercises. A great example is when you do squats you engage glutes and quads but also your core muscles as well. I guess that is one of the reasons my calf muscles are so much more defined now. I spent several weeks going up and down a ladder painting and let me tell you I have amazing calves now. So much so that I go up and down the ladder a little every day.

Better Balance

I now realize I need to not do it everything so much and maybe more on a specific day. Having strong leg muscles mean you have better balance. Just think about it, your legs are how you balance your body so naturally when they are stronger the better your balance is. I know I have horrible balance and will fall over at the drop of a hat. It is something I have begun to work on.

Weight Loss

Working out your legs help with overall weight loss. The reason? Well one of the biggest is that your leg muscles are part of the biggest muscle group in your body. The better they are worked out the better your metabolism will be which thus leads to better weight loss.

More than Quads

You must be careful that you don’t overtrain your quads though. Make sure you are working out your hamstrings and glutes as well. You need a well balanced workout to maximize your efforts.

Should I Skip a Day?

If you are really sore or have a possible injury go ahead and skip leg day. Also if you are sick with a fever, chest congestion, a stomachache, or even a dry cough skip your workout. Other symptoms that mean you need to skip a day include fever, tiredness, or extensive muscle pain. If you just have a sore throat or a runny nose (other minor symptom) you can workout but be sure to cut it down some.

Remember

Remember to always discuss any workout routine with your doctor. They are the best equipped to tell you what is best for you. While this blog post is intended for your information and enjoyment I am not a healthcare professional and cannot advise you on what is best for you.
